Balance Rate Formula

The formula of Balance Rate is :

Line Balance Rate (LBR) = (Sum of All Process Cycle Time / (Total People * Highest CT)) * 100%

For example:
Sum of All Process Cycle Time = 229s
Total People = 8
Highest CT = 60s

Find the balance rate of this production line:
LBR = (229 / (8 * 60)) * 100% = 47.7%

Line balancing formula

From the above picture, we can see that using the line balance rate formula, we can identify both imbalanced and balanced line rates as well as easily find the bottleneck point operation in the line.

IE should set the standard for the Line Balance Rate for all production. Based on the IE standard line balance rate, each production line supervisor needs to check every day whether the production line meets the IE standard.

Now, the question is raised: what is the IE standard of the line balance rate?

Usually, the IE standard of line balance rate is between 85% and 100%. If any production line balance rate is within this range, it can achieve the production target per hour, which also helps reduce costs. The most significant benefit of a balanced production line is the lower cost to achieve the production target.
